How to Build Your Own Raspberry Pi Cyberdeck Inspired By Rare MSX
If you are a fan of retro-futuristic cyberpunk aesthetics, you might have dreamed of owning a cyberdeck: a portable computer that lets you hack into cyberspace. While cyberdecks are mostly fictional devices, you can build your own version using a Raspberry Pi and some creativity.
In this article, we will show you how to build a Raspberry Pi cyberdeck inspired by a rare MSX computer from the 1980s: the Sony HIT-BIT HB-101. This bright red machine had a distinctive design with a tilted screen, a large keyboard, and a cartridge slot. We will try to recreate some of these features using 3D printing, wood cutting, and some electronics.
What You Will Need
To build your own Raspberry Pi cyberdeck inspired by rare MSX, you will need the following materials and tools:
A Raspberry Pi 3 or 4
A 7-inch TFT display
A Perixx keyboard and touchpad
A generic laptop power supply and a 5V step-down converter
A 3D printer and filament
A table saw and some wood
Some polycarbonate sheet and foamed PVC sheet
Some wood putty, body filler, spot putty, sandpaper, and paint
Some screws, nuts, bolts, and wires
A soldering iron and some solder
A drill and some drill bits
A computer with an SD card reader and an internet connection
Step 1: Design and Print the Faceted Sides
The first step is to design and print the faceted sides of the cyberdeck. These are the parts that give the cyberdeck its angular shape and hold the screen and the keyboard in place. You can use any 3D modeling software to create these parts, or you can download the STL files from this Instructables page.
The faceted sides are composed of several pieces that need to be glued together and attached to a 1/4-inch thick polycarbonate backplate. You can use super glue or epoxy to join the pieces together. Make sure to align them properly and leave some gaps for the wires and screws.
Step 2: Cut and Attach the Nose Piece
The next step is to cut and attach the nose piece under the keyboard. This is the part that gives the cyberdeck its curved front and houses the touchpad. You can use a piece of wood to make this part. You will need to cut it at the appropriate angles with a table saw. You can use this diagram as a reference.
Once you have cut the wood piece, you can attach it to the polycarbonate backplate with some screws. You will also need to drill some holes for the touchpad wires and mount it on the wood piece with some double-sided tape.
Step 3: Cut and Attach the Top Surface
The third step is to cut and attach the top surface of the cyberdeck. This is the part that covers the Raspberry Pi, the display driver board, and the power supply.
