The book introduces the following key concepts for film and sound studies: soundtracks, soundtrack criticism, soundtrack composition, formalist readings of film music, aural aesthetics, sound and gender, sound and representation, film and (its) sound, soundtrack-based reception theories, film music and sound analysis, film noir and soundtracks. It also addresses the topic of cross-medium and cross-genre poetics in film and sound, from the early days of silent cinema to the present day, and looks at the transnational connections of soundtracks from Hollywood to Hong Kong and to Japan. It is an excellently crafted and unique book that is a must-have for film and sound studies, as well as a powerful resource for all students and tutors who wish to expand their knowledge and make their own work more effective.
Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory is the first monograph in the IJIRS book series to be dedicated to film, sound and music/sound. It is also the first to offer a close reading of the topic of soundtracks. It was researched and written over the course of five years at the Salisbury University, Maryland. Its author Elsie Walker (Ph.D. in Film & Media Studies) has had extensive teaching and research experience at the university level in New Zealand, England and the United States.
In exploring the influential works of Bataille and Kristeva, the contributors consider the shared concerns and broad theoretical and political debates that characterize the critical work of both writers, and apply their insights to a diverse range of cultural productions. The essays in this collection offer compelling and novel readings of several key modern and contemporary works of fiction, including Kafka, Bolaño, Beckett, and the novel by Chinese writer Ha Jin, The Family -- as well as a number of film and television productions including The Apprentice (BBC), The Wire (HBO) and Mr Selfridge (BBC). In this context, the contributors also consider the relevance of the concept of abjection to the study of representations of gender, sexuality, race, trauma, and trauma narratives in popular culture, theatre, and film. The authors also examine the potential of the concept for interrogating the recent resurgence of ‘queer theory’, in ways that expand and enrich its legacy and historical context.
The contributors to this edited volume are exploring and expanding the impact and significance of Bataille and Kristeva’s theories for critical and cultural analysis. Their contributions demonstrate the enduring importance of the concept of abjection for understanding the way we make sense of the world, as well as the complex, diverse, and often contradictory ways that people do so. 827ec27edc
