Part of that wonder shines through in Shadow of the Tomb Raider's combat, which is realistically steeped in Year 3 customisation. There are a number of welcome improvements in this year, which include a function that lets you freely delay triggers to use stealth to your advantage. It's a very welcome addition, as it even goes as far as allowing you to queue them up without having to always interrupt your shooting just to set up a cheeky melee.
Despite some relatively striking visual enhancements, Shadow of the Tomb Raider still won't win any hearts with its eighth-gen visuals. 2018's Tomb Raider isn't a prettier game, but it fleshes out a better-realised version of its predecessor. It's as though the extra time the studio has spent on detail has paid off with even more immersion.
Beyond the effects, Shadow of the Tomb Raider's world feels more alive, and it feels that way because of its NPCs. Its locales feel scattered with activities happening at all times of the day, and it shows even the forest around the opening title sequence is on the move. From spear throwing festival attendees to traders and bandits, there's always something to keep the world from feeling empty. Shadow of the Tomb Raider's NPC can come across as a bit overly chatty at times, but it's a minor distraction on a game that's otherwise so good. d2c66b5586
