Alric goes to the gate of the fortress, and finds it closed. He assumes that Balor has managed to create some sort of barrier, so he calls his men to follow him. The legion begins to advance towards the fortress, when Alric sees the hand of Connacht in the kingdom. They find the sword of Balor and Alric realizes that the sword he had found was Balor's, which he had taken from Connacht, and which he thought he had disposed of. He then uses the sword to cut open the gate and is about to enter, when he is attacked by Balor, who reveals himself to the legion. He then activates his sword and begins to cut down the legion. He is then confronted by Alric, and they begin to duel. Connacht explains to the legion that Balor has returned to the world and is now evil, and that he has returned to take the sword of Tain from Alric. Connacht then stabs Alric in the side and leaves him for dead, while he goads the legion to begin a charge to defeat Balor. The legion proceeds to charge the fortress, when they are ambushed by a host of Myrkridians, who begin to slaughter the legion. Alric however, manages to stab Connacht in the back, and stabs him in the face as well, and then collapses, and the Myrkridians are then distracted by Alric. Alric then stands and stabs Connacht in the face, and stabs him in the chest, causing Connacht to fall dead, and his Myrkridians to also begin to fall.
At this point, the Legion's advance force signals a retreat. They fear that the sheer number of ghosts that leave the fortress means that the Tain has begun releasing them, and that might mean an apocalypse like no other. They say that they are ready to fight the Legion if they attack, but they are clearly losing. A human wizard named Aernath of New Grania is called upon to perform a ritual, which compels the Tain to remain within the fortress, and the fortress to protect itself. The Legion withdraws, and Balor's forces begin to sally forth through the rubble.
On the other side, Balor has summoned the Heroic Spirit of Knowledge from the Tain to aid him in this battle. The Heroic Spirit of Knowledge tells Balor that Alric is the one who is evil, and that he must not heed his words. Balor then sends a messenger to the Legion, and the messenger tells him that if he doesn't heed the words of the Heroes, that he will perish in the fires of the eternal flame.
